About Us

2005

The story of obesetiger, ObeseTiger, Obesetiger, Obese Tiger or obese tiger floats back many moons ago to the year 2005, when, as bright young law students at the University of Plymouth, I was sat in the back of a lecture hall. My compatriot and drinking 'buddy', for want of another word, Daniel Cook had, as per usual, been doodling with his notepad and pen and, during a pro Pete Doherty phase, created a drawing that has now become the Obesetiger logo. Inspired by the cat from the film Alice in Wonderland, Dan had created a cartoon, childish version, only this time with a cheeky grin and cigarette. Musing over how good the drawing was, we photographed and exchanged it, only to forget about it lodged in the background of our phone memories....forever.

2006

Interesting times for our young artist Dan. Whilst at University, the poor diet and large alcohol consumption led to him slowly gaining weight. As a party trick, and when in a positive financial situation, Dan would often shave his hair and have an animal print tattooed into it, similar to what he had done below:

Leading on from this was the nickname 'Obesetiger', and this name stuck.

2009

There had always been discussions about using the awesome cheshire cat picture to start a tee shirt company over the previous few years, but nothing came to fruition. Suddenly, it dawned upon myself and a few others that now university had ended we may need to go out and get real jobs. Inspired by reading an article on JohnnyCupCakes I headed out to find out how such a company could come together.

I knew with some photoshop skills and a printing company I had met some years before that things were possible, but all of a sudden the realisation that, with the sale of mobile phones that held the image of the cat, I was catless. I pestered Dan, nothing. I attempted to use an image of the actual Cheshire Cat, to which Dan showed disgust, only to end up sending me a further hand drawn version that now adorns the top of this page and that is selected to represent the company.

So I wanted to sell shirts eh?I needed a website, I knew I could throw something like this together, but an actual meat and bones, selling store website?I needed help. Fortunatley I had put up a young Latvian that I met at uni and I guess he owed me a favour, and things were on.

Following in the footsteps of Johnny though, I knew that a blog was essential, that being quirky, good value for money, good quality and having good customer service was the way to go. Pulling in help from a couple of people in the same boat of having finished university and looking to pad time, we ventured forward.

There are a few rules of thumb following on from early discussions.

- Quirky marketing - not just following the run of the mill advertising. Handing out free samples to people who we think deserve it will always work.
- Different and quirky way of packaging the product, expect more than just a tee shirt in your packaging!
- Friendly staff, always ready to answer calls and emails!
- High quality, authentic made in the UK shirts, of a gsm of higher than 200, perfect to wear as a summer get away, just chilling with your mates looking smart, or clubbing to your hearts content.
-Limited edition tee shirts - some produced in very limited numbers, you'll be the only one in the club in an obesetiger shirt!

And that, is about it. If you need anymore information use the contact page, we'll keep this one updated with news and information as we progress.
